News
It was our guitar player Jim Wilson’s idea to name the album. We were at band practice one afternoon, and I asked the lads what we should call this batch of songs and Jim said, Nice. I immediately thought of all the ways one could take that word and it seemed like a good idea to me.

Work on the album started in June 2000. We had some days off between tours and I figured we might as well get to work. The boys were in agreement. We secured studio A at Cherokee Studios and a few days with engineer Clif Norrell, who has been working with the band since 1997’s Come in and Burn. We recorded several songs and then went back on tour. Later that year and earlier this year, we went back in and recorded more and ended up with about 29 songs. We picked out some, sequenced them just so and here it is.

.Jim, Marcus, Jason and I have been playing and recording since early 1998. It’s not exactly a new band. With 124 shows or so under our belt, it’s a tested and roadworthy unit. I think the playing on the record reflects that. These guys can play.

This record, like the last one, Get Some Go Again, was made in a very simple fashion. Analog 2" tape, real instruments, cut live, no drum beats fixed, no vocals pitched, just music played hard, good sounds going onto tape, very few takes, next. We got some great guitar sounds this time around. Our road manager Mike Curtis, a guitar and tone aficionado, set us up with several amp, cabinet and pedal options he constructed with gear he rented from LA’s Black Market vintage gear store. It was great having an extra pair of good ears in the room.

The back up singers on "I Want so Much More" and "Up for It," this was our manager’s idea. He heard the tracks and commented that they would sound better with back up singers. I have never really thought of bringing in session players. I figured it might be worth checking out and if it didn’t go well, we didn’t have to use them. Anyway, the gals came in and heard the songs and stood in front of us and started singing along with the tracks. I sat there, fairly amazed. Can they sing! So, we put them in the studio and they went for it and nailed all these amazing vocals in one take and we thanked them and they left. The songs came out sounding different than I had heard them in my head so chalk one up for talented singing. At least some vocals on this record are on key.

That’s all I can think of to tell you about this record. It is what it is and we are having a great time playing. I am in my 21st year of touring and like the rest of the band, am very much looking forward to the upcoming shows. Studio work is a pain in the neck and the reward has always been that I get to go on tour and hit stage where there are no second takes and everyone can see what you lack. Nice
